THE UNBUTTONING | 2019
a collaboration with Peniel Benjamin Hong

Creation and destruction, innocence and mischief, power and surrender - what can be found in the liminal space of ‘childish’ play? Spanning the course of four days, The Unbuttoning was a performative act of intuitive play, serving to subvert our own established artistic norms and sensibilities. With the comings and goings of outside viewers, we rearranged, recreated, and redefined materials and techniques, pushing the boundaries of our own self-imposed limitations. The results of this session of play were discarded or repurposed elsewhere, in the same way a child’s creative works live in a constant cycle of creation and destruction.

“Play is the answer to how anything new comes about.”

— Jean Piaget, The Language and Thought of the Child, 1923
